Hilton Predicts 2019 Growth Ahead of Industry Trends

Hilton Worldwide reported low-single-digit growth in average daily rate and room revenue for the fourth quarter of 2018, along with double-digit growth in management and franchise fees, which have been a strength throughout the year. The company beat its earnings guidance with net income of $225 million for the quarter and $769 million for the year.

Fred Reid Will Develop Airbnb Transportation Strategy

Airbnb has hired air industry vet Fred Reid as global head of transportation, though the hospitality platform remains vague as to its intentions for the industry. Reid will "focus on building partnerships and services that make travel seamless," according to Airbnb, though co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky said the company has not decided exactly what path it is taking. It does not, however, plan to build its own airline or to build "just another place on the internet where you can buy a plane ticket," he said.

Global Air Traffic Growth Outpaced Capacity Growth in 2018

Global air traffic grew 6.5 percent in 2018, according to the International Air Transport Association. That growth outpaced the year's 6.1 percent capacity growth, leading to a record load factor of 81.9 percent. "2018 was another year of strong passenger demand," said IATA director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac. Compared to 2017's 8 percent growth in demand, however, 2018 was slower. IATA attributed the relative slowdown to the second half of the year.

Delta Puts New Narrowbody Aircraft into Service

On Thursday, Delta began its first service on its new Airbus A220-100 aircraft with flights between New York's LaGuardia Airport and each Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Boston. Delta has configured the aircraft with 12 First Class seats, 15 Delta Comfort Plus seats and 82 Main Cabin seats, and seating is wider than Delta's other narrowbody aircraft.

Air Ticket Sales Rose 7.1 Percent in 2018

The total consolidated dollar value of airline ticket sales sold by U.S.-based travel agencies in 2018 totaled $95 billion, up 7.1 percent, according to Airlines Reporting Corp. The average price for a U.S. round-trip ticket was $490 in 2018, up $6 from 2017. ARC president and CEO Mike Premo attributed the rise in sales in 2018 to "more capacity in the airline industry, more international (higher-priced) tickets, fuel-related fare increases and surcharges from higher fuel costs, more taxes and passenger facility charges."

U.S. Domestic Leisure Travel Outpaced Business Travel in November

Total travel to or within the U.S. grew 3 percent year over year in November, according to the U.S. Travel Association's Travel Trends Index. For domestic travel, strong consumer confidence prompted leisure travel to grow 3.4 percent, compared with business travel's 2.2 percent growth. Domestic travel combined grew 3 percent, while international inbound travel to the U.S. grew 3.8 percent. "Moving forward, continued, albeit moderating, growth is expected in the near term, with international travel likely to slow more than domestic," said USTA SVP of research David Huether

Outlook Strong for 2019 U.S. Domestic Business Travel

Domestic business travel will grow faster in 2019 than it did the past three years, according to the U.S. Travel Association, and for the period from December 2018 through May 2019, it will grow 3.2 percent year over year. Strong corporate profits and the near-team outlook for business investment point to 2019 starting off strong for business travel. According to the National Federation of Independent Business Professionals and the Business Roundtable, optimism from both small and large companies about the economy is high. "We think that business investment is going to carry forward and business travel along with that will continue to be compelled in the first half of this year,"said USTA SVP of research David Huether.

Shutdown Increasing Corporate Travel Risks

As the U.S. government shutdown turned three weeks old, the odds of tangible and lasting effects on the travel community—disrupted trips or, even worse, security risks—are getting higher. In the initial weeks, the impact on corporate travel was more on the level of a "hassle," such as reported longer lines at some security checkpoints, said Bruce McIndoe, founder and president of global travel risk management firm WorldAware, formerly iJet. If the shutdown persists for a few more weeks, however, there is "an increasing threat to the system" as Transportation Security Administration personnel, air traffic controllers, inspectors and other critical members of the aviation industry don't receive paychecks, he said. "You'll have individuals peel off and look for other opportunities for income, and you'll start having holes," McIndoe said. "People will be pushed to work overtime, which creates more stress. In the unlikely event that this thing moves into months, then you just had a rapidly escalating risk of a catastrophic failure in the system."

Corporate Travelers Favor Bleisure & Card Rewards

Corporate travelers were drawn to bleisure trips in 2018 and preferred using personal credit cards during business travel, a new study from Wex and Mastercard found. Of the more than 375 business travelers the companies surveyed as part of their 2019 Travel Trends and Expectations report, 55 percent tended to extend business trips to further explore cities.

2018's Most Punctual Airlines Globally

Among the world's 20 mega carriers, five U.S. carriers placed among the 10 most punctual, according to OAG's 2019 Punctuality League report: Alaska Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest, United Airlines and American Airlines. OAG labels a flight as on time if it arrives/departs within 15 minutes of the scheduled time. Among mega carriers, defined by number of scheduled flights, Latam Airlines Group was the most punctual. ANA was second, followed by Japan Air Lines with 84 percent.

Qatar Takes Stake in China Southern

United Nabs ExpressJet for $70 Million
