For those of you who are currently enrolled in school and pursuing a degree in hospitality management, I’ll let you in on a secret: you are being lied to! “Not surprising” you might say, as we all already knew that. I should preface this by saying that I think attending a reputable institution that provides higher learning, as well as a few other life lessons, along the way is extremely valuable. Going to college was still one of the best decisions of my life and it laid the foundation for future success, no matter my ultimate career trajectory.

Year-Round Resorts

Hotel Interactive - 6 October 2017
As the calendar moves toward October the ski season is fast approaching and for many traditional ski destinations their financial success or failure in a given year often lies in the ‘offseason,’ a seven- to eight-month period when the mountains are shut down and the scores of skiers go home. At least one long-time resort, the Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Conference Center in Stowe, VT, has figured out that the key is not to have an ‘offseason’ at all. In recognition of that fact, the family-owned resort has continued to expand over the course of its 50-plus year history to offer a widening array of amenities and services to guests. According to Scot Baraw, vp, sales and part of the second generation of family ownership, despite the area’s national reputation as one of the most popular ski destinations in the Northeast there are plenty of other attractions to generate business.

In fact, in-room coffee is the third most mentioned item by hotel guests posting TripAdvisor reviews, just behind WiFi and fitness centers. Furthermore, some 30 percent of U.S. households now have a single-serve brewer at home, while roughly 90 percent of Americans begin their day with a hot beverage, either coffee or tea.

Answering The Call For Healthier Desserts

Hotel Interactive - 4 October 2017
It’s 2017 and almost 2018. People are drinking less alcohol, renouncing cigarettes, exercising more often and eating healthier overall. If you’re smart, you will recognize the signs and adjust your F&B operations accordingly. Many other articles, especially those under the purview of New Year’s or autumn resolutions, will cover methods and choice tips by which to give your mains and appetizers the health kick they need to keep drawing in patrons with increasingly esoteric dietary restrictions.
