Omni Hotels & Resorts Donates More Than 76,000 Meals

To commemorate Giving Tuesday, Omni Hotels & Resorts recently announced that more than 76,000 meals have been donated to local Feeding America food banks through its PGA TOUR Birdies-or-Better campaign. To date, Omni’s Say Goodnight to Hunger program has provided more than 14 million meals to help end the fight against hunger.

Net Zero Hotels Made Easy with Modular Engineering, Tesla Solar Technology

The pieces to put together a net zero hotel are here and ready to go—and at a cost less than typical hotel construction. So says S2A Modular, a Murrieta, Calif.-based company specializing in electrically self-sustaining, custom luxury homes and commercial buildings such as hotels. S2A Modular combines modular construction techniques with Tesla solar panels and Powerwalls (Powerpacks for larger buildings such as hotels) to create structures that get by without electricity provided by a utility. In fact, S2A buildings are built to provide surplus energy to the local utility when possible, creating “surplus energy income” for the building owner.

India's First GreenOtels Award Announced

India’s first GreenOtels Awards have been announced. The Awards are envisioned to solely give recognition to India’s most sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially responsible hotels. The Awards were given to hotels and resorts in four categories—Extra Large Hotel Category (250 rooms and above), Large category (120 rooms up to 250), Medium category (60 rooms to 120 rooms) and the Small category (up to 60 rooms).

Sandals Resorts International Eliminates All Styrofoam Across Caribbean Resorts

The 2018 International Green Construction Code was released recently by the International Code Council, ASHRAE, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and the Illuminating Engineering Society. The IgCC is part of the Code Council’s family of comprehensive, coordinated and modern model codes—including the International Building Code, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code and International Fire Code—used around the world.

Number of Cases of Human Trafficking Reported to Hotline Increases

A day after Congress passed the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention and Protection Reauthorization Act of 2017, (see article—The new U.S. anti-trafficking law, passed in Congress on December 17, says when federal employees travel they should choose travel and hospitality companies that follow the six points of the ECPAT Code of Conduct), Polaris reported that the number of cases of human trafficking reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline are projected to jump at least 25 percent in 2018 compared to 2017.

Modular Construction Gaining Traction in Hotel Industry

Modular construction is trending. I heard this week from S2A Modular, a California-based company that designs and constructs electrically self-sustaining residential and commercial buildings. The parts of the homes and commercial buildings are constructed in the company’s MegaFactory. Unique to the company is its net zero approach. Each structure pairs Tesla’s Powerwall system with solar technology to produce zero emissions. Modules are scalable and stackable. The company says it has constructed hotels.

Swissotel Releases Sustainability Report Update

New Dodge Report: Global Green Building Activity Continues to Rise

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced the results of the Dodge Data & Analytics World Green Building Trends 2018 SmartMarket Report, to which USGBC is a contributing partner. Overall, global green building activity continues to rise, with significant increases expected in 19 countries over the next three years. Importantly, nearly half of survey respondents expect that most of their projects in the next three years will be green buildings.

Disney Conservation Fund Awards $5 Million to Organizations

More Businesses Including Sustainable Development Goals in Sustainability Reporting

Nearly three quarter of organizations (72 percent) mention the global Sustainable Development Goals in their annual corporate or sustainability reports—an increase of 10 percent on last year, according to a new study by PwC. But concrete measures and integration remain elusive for many as organizations struggle to identify actions beyond business as usual targets.
