Freshly opened, the London hotel is changing hands for €181.8 million, as its was just acquired by varied pension funds via a club deal transaction. The Park Plaza London Waterloo hotel has just been purchased for €181.8 million (£160 million). The transaction was made via a club deal agreement by several pension funds, which concluded the operation through the broker's investment vehicle. CopperWynd Resort & Club has named veteran Valley of the Sun hotel leader Jeremy Dougherty general manager. Dougherty comes to CopperWynd from Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa where he was general manager. Immediately before that, he was opening general manager at the Graduate Hotel Tempe. Earlier in his career, Dougherty had worked at Sanctuary - as resort manager and, before that, revenue and reservations manager. He also had served as director of guest operations at Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale.

"If we were just to cave, what's to stop them from doing it again and again?"Well, they're doing it around the country. In clubs large and small, the rules of belonging are in upheaval for the dimpled-ball set. The popularity of the Masters and other tourneys notwithstanding, courses are closing at the rate of 150 a year. The number of duffers is down to 25 million from 30 million a decade ago. Golf is just not hot, especially since the apparent end of the Tiger Woods glory days, and the old club model doesn't work so well anymore.

Jan. 08--Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel will cease operating Feb. 1 after more than a half-century on Banyan Drive. Hotel operations will continue fully staffed through Jan. 31. The adjacent Uncle Billy's General Store will operate into February. The closures will result in the layoffs of 27 hotel employees and 10 store workers. The land under the hotel will revert back to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources when all four parcel leases expire March 14. The abrupt hotel closure marks the end of an era in which mom-and-pop hotels dominated Hilo's tourism scene. But Hawaii island leaders say it's also the best chance to usher in a new future that returns historic Banyan Drive to its former glory. During the steamship days of the 1940s and 1950s, tourism officials say, Hilo's close proximity to the volcanoes attracted more tourists than Waikiki.
